In the world of manicures, safety matters just as much as style.
While we love creating eye-catching designs and flawless finishes, it’s important not to overlook the essential practice of disinfecting and sterilizing manicure tools. In this blog, we’ll explain why these procedures are so important and how we at The Pamper Room keep our clients safe.
Understanding the Risks
Nail salons are breeding grounds for bacteria, fungi, and viruses, if tools aren’t properly sanitized. From common bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus to more resilient pathogens like HCV (hepatitis C virus), the risks are varied and real. These pathogens can be transmitted from one client to another through contaminated tools or products.
Here are some examples:
· Bacterial infections – The “greenie” bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) can cause green discoloration of nails and is often mistaken for a fungal infection. While not usually serious, it doesn’t look great. Other bacteria, like Staphylococcus aureus, can lead to boils, pimples, or skin infections around the nails.
· Fungal infections – Can affect nails (onychomycosis) or skin (tinea). Very persistent, especially in nails, sometimes taking months to clear. Symptoms may include nail thickening, discoloration, deformation of the nail plate, or flaking skin.
· Viral infections – For example, HPV can cause warts around the nails (periungual warts).
· Bloodborne infections – HCV, HBV, HIV/AIDS. Transmission is rare but possible if tools are contaminated.
Our commitment to safety
At The Pamper Room, we recognize that nail technicians are not qualified to diagnose or treat any medical conditions—and that simple understanding is our first step toward ensuring proper preventative care in our salon. For the health and safety of everyone, we don’t accept new clients with active infections. Before a pedicure, we kindly ask clients to complete our online pre-check form, which helps you review the condition of your feet before booking. If we notice any concerns, we’ll recommend consulting a podiatrist, dermatologist, or another medical professional.
We never try to hide issues with products; we only work on healthy nails. Once your treatment is complete, we’ll be happy to provide any service you wish—because only healthy nails are beautiful nails.
We don’t take any chances—some issues may be obvious, but others aren’t. That’s why we follow strict safety protocols. While disinfection can eliminate many pathogens, viruses such as HIV, HBV, and HCV can only be destroyed through proper sterilization. Given how serious these infections are, sterilization is not optional in our salon.
Disinfection and Sterilization
Disinfection involves killing or inactivating most microorganisms on surfaces, such as nail nippers or drill bits. Sterilization, on the other hand, goes a step further by eliminating all forms of microbial life, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
The disinfection process includes mechanical cleaning and soaking tools in a disinfectant solution. This is sufficient for items like dust brushes or adhesive file bases. However, tools that come into contact with skin or are used for skin removal—such as scissors, nippers, and drill bits—must be sterilized using an autoclave or hot air sterilizer. It’s also important to note that “UV sterilizers” cannot sterilize tools, despite what their name might suggest.
How we do it

Disinfection
First, we wash and clean our tools to remove any visible debris. Then, we soak them in a disinfectant solution for the recommended contact time. We use BARBICIDE®, known worldwide as the ultimate product for EPA-registered disinfection in salons, barbershops, and spas. It is effective against HIV-1, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Staphylococcus (including MRSA), Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Clostridium Difficile (C.Diff), Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE), Herpes, Influenza (including H1N1), “Athletes Foot” (TineaPedis).
To ensure thorough cleaning, we use an ultrasonic device, which generates high-frequency sound waves that create tiny bubbles in liquid. These bubbles remove debris and particles from every corner of our tools, allowing the disinfectant to reach all surfaces for maximum effectiveness and safety.
Sanitation
Next, all tools are thoroughly cleaned with a brush and rinsed. Plastic tools, like brushes, are ready to use once dried, while other tools move on to the third step.
Sterilization
Disinfected and dry tools are packed in sterilization pouches and processed in the Enbio Autoclave, a Swiss-designed, professional sterilization device trusted in both medical and salon settings. Using high-pressure saturated steam, it destroys all bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores, ensuring our tools are sterile. Sterilized tools remain safe for use for up to 14 days, guaranteeing maximum safety and hygiene for every client.
Disposable Tools
Items like nail files, buffers, and wooden sticks cannot be fully disinfected or sterilized. Washable files are ineffective because their rough surfaces trap debris. That’s why we use disposable tools, giving each client a brand-new file and wooden cuticle pusher. You’re welcome to keep your file after the treatment if you wish.

How Can You Protect Yourself?
When choosing a salon for a manicure, take a moment to familiarize yourself with their hygiene practices. don’t be afraid to ask before booking whether they sterilize their tools or follow other hygiene practices. Salons that practice this level of care, genuinely respect their clients and are happy to let you familiarize yourself with their safety standards.
While in the salon, pay attention to these details:
UV/LED lamp – If you can see fingerprints or debris on the bottom of the lamp, it’s a red flag. In salons where minimum hygiene standards aren’t respected, you can’t expect a safe treatment.
Disposable tools – Make sure the salon uses new files and buffers for each client. You can often tell if a file is new or has scratches from previous use.
Sterilized tools – Your nail technician should open sterilized tools in front of you. You can also check the marks on the packaging, which indicate that sterilization has been properly completed.
Let’s keep those nails looking great and health risks away.
At The Pamper Room, we’re proud to combine style with the highest hygiene standards—because you deserve both.
What do you think—have you ever checked how your salon disinfects or sterilizes tools?
